A tardigrade genome and the evolution of extremotolerance
Thomas C. Boothby et al. / Nature Communications
Tardigrades are microscopic animals renowned for their ability to survive extreme environmental conditions, including desiccation, freezing, radiation, and the vacuum of space. This study presents the genome of the tardigrade Ramazzottius varieornatus and identifies genetic adaptations associated with extraordinary stress tolerance. The findings provide insight into the molecular basis of extremotolerance and may inform future applications in biotechnology and medicine.
